Statins causing muscle pain/cramp?

Change in muscle soreness, cramp, ease of activity …

Medication such as statins, patient education, dietary changes, and exercise are all recommended treatments for excessive fatty substances found in blood testing (hyperlipidemia).

When you begin an exercise program and have muscle soreness, this muscle soreness typically lasts 24-48 hours. If your muscle pain lasts longer than this and you are on a statin, it might be beneficial to discuss your symptoms with your trusted healthcare provider.

If you notice you are:

having difficulty getting out of a chair,

climbing up and/or downstairs,

having difficulty getting out of a chair,

or getting up from the toilet, then

the above observations could possibly be related to your statin medication. Also, if you are not walking as far or are getting more fatigued quicker than before taking the medication, then this should also be communicated to your trusted healthcare provider.

The side effects most commonly associated with statin use involve muscle cramping, soreness, fatigue, weakness, and, in rare cases, rapid muscle breakdown that can lead to death.

Many people are on multiple medications and the medication themselves and the body can be complex. Many people think just because the health care provider ordered it then it must be correct.

The solution can involve a general reassessment of your symptoms (which is a good idea anyway). If the healthcare provider believes a statin remains a good idea for you, they may change the type of statin you are prescribed to a different type that will suit your body better.

A win-win situation where your muscle cramps/fatigue/weakness is no longer a problem and you are dealing with the hyperlipidemia (excess blood fats) at the same time as providing a chance to re-evaluate whether diet and exercise may also be included/substituted in your treatment.

The effective relationship, between a patient and the prescribing trusted healthcare provider, requires having a good relationship where communication is in the forefront.
