Nutrition / Body fat / Diet – A GeriTraK view

Something To Chew Over

Not everyone who is aware of the value nutrition plays in our overall health and well-being actually takes the necessary steps to ensure a good outcome.

There is a good reason for people disregarding health information.

A good diet:

Is balanced for optimal carbohydrate (sugars), fats and protein

Permits us to have enough energy to get through our physical and mental day, with minimal fatigue

Is sufficient for our needs without excess energy being stored as bad fat

Bad fat is difficult to lose and is a pointer to many quality of life affecting diseases

A good diet is important throughout life

A good diet helps protect the body against disease and ill health

We have been hearing that certain food has addictive properties!

How often does a person get fresh ingredients with fruits and vegetables?

How hard is it to get fresh food without so many food industry additives?

What is nutrition hype versus reality and how will this save money and improve health?

If you visit a Body Worlds Vital exhibit you will find the attempt to compare peoples eating habits throughout the world and learn that the US appears to be consuming a lot of those highly addictive foods.

If we think about the concept that we can actually be addicted to food then we realize that it is not just about self-care control.

We really need to be compassionate about understanding this concept and love ourselves and be patient while realizing that we do have some control over what we eat.

If the substances in the food we chose to eat are addictive, then the only way to break the addiction is to consume less of the addictive substances.

We need to accept that we may not feel comfortable for a while during the weaning off process.

But it is not as simple as just a change in diet. It can take up to 6 weeks to get the brain used to less sugar. And the same applies to salt.

If we asked ourselves the following question;

“Every time I place something into my mouth, and I suspect it is in excess of the caloric intake that I need, how much extra exercise will I need to avoid unwanted effects’’?

Would we consume the soda or pastry if we had to walk another three miles?

Please see body images of two people who have low and high Body Mass Index (BMI).

The following visuals may change your life.

The photographs are from the Bodyworlds exhibition and are of real bodies.

The first is of someone with a low BMI Index and the second is a high BMI.

The apron of skin and fat at the front of the obese example would have placed that individual at increased risk of many diseases, including diabetes, cancer, heart and liver degenerative change, as well as increased arthritis.

Conclusion

Obesity and excessive weight have reached epidemic proportions in the Western world. Many disease processes are worsened or caused when weight gain exceeds normal boundaries. It is vitally important that the relationship between excessive weight and poor health is fully understood.

There are many factors involved in the obesity epidemic, including cultural and genetic variations, lifestyle choices, food science, advertising effects, mental health, and exercise.

Due to the multiple causes of obesity, it is very likely that multiple remedies will need to be applied on a population-wide basis before change can occur. Education and legislation will be vital.
