Pain-Part 3. Does pain mean damage?

Pain = Damage?

The simple answer is no. Pain does not mean there is always damage to human tissue.

There is no direct link between pain felt and whether or not there is tissue damage.

Having clarified the above, it is important to state that the pain people may feel is real, and there is no suggestion that such pain is imaginary.

Pain can be elusive and is often perverse in the way it presents.

Nonetheless, it has been proven that sometimes a sharp knife cut may go unnoticed until blood is seen. Yet, severe pain can be felt when there has been no damage at all.

The concept that pain can be experienced even when there has never been an injury is difficult to comprehend, both for researchers and those with pain.

It is very important for answers to be found to the perplexing and varied pain presentation, because society, as well as individuals, can be seriously impacted.

Once the misconceptions about pain are both explained and accepted by all aspects of society, effective pain management will be much easier to achieve.

We are currently living at a time where an exciting great change is just beginning. Scientific understanding of pain is advancing rapidly, Governments everywhere are joining with researchers and lobbyists to help reverse the opioid epidemic and other health initiatives are seeing greater funding.
